Parlay (Accumulator)
A parlay (accumulator, accu) is a single bet combining 2+ selections. All legs must win for the parlay to pay out; one loss voids the entire wager.
Parlay Math
Parlay odds = product of all leg odds.
Parlay odds = odds_1 × odds_2 × ... × odds_n
Example: 1.91 × 1.91 × 1.91 = 6.97. Sounds great, but the implied probability is 14.3% — and the true no-vig probability of three 50% events is 12.5%. The book retains compounded vig on every leg.
Why Most Parlays Are −EV
Each leg carries vig of ~4–6%. A 5-leg parlay accumulates ~22% effective vig. Even profitable single-bet strategies usually become losing strategies in parlay form. The exception: correlated parlays (e.g., team to win + over) where books haven't priced correlation correctly.
When Parlays Make Sense
1. Promo / boost parlays (book reduces vig). 2. Correlated parlays at books that price them as independent. 3. Single-game parlay (SGP) softness in early markets. Otherwise, stick to flat singles for compounding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are 2-leg parlays better than singles?
Same EV mathematically if uncorrelated. But the compounded vig drag means singles win on volatility-adjusted returns.
Can I make money on parlays?
Only on correlated lines or boosted promos. Otherwise the long-term ROI is sharply negative for typical bettors.
