How We Find Value Bets

EVBets uses a data-driven approach to identify bets where the true probability of winning exceeds what the bookmaker's odds imply. No guesswork — pure math.

Odds Collection from 47 Bookmakers

Every 30 minutes, EVBets fetches live odds from 94 bookmakers via The Odds API. We cover 88+ sports leagues including soccer, basketball, tennis, cricket, baseball, American football, and ice hockey.

No-Vig Probability from Sharp Markets

Sharp bookmakers like Pinnacle operate with thin margins (~2%) and attract professional bettors. Their odds reflect the true probability better than soft bookmakers. We use them as the reference market.

Example: Soccer Match
Pinnacle Home Win at2.10
Implied probability1 ÷ 2.10 = 47.62%
Pinnacle margin ~2%, true prob ≈~46.7%
Fair (no-vig) odds1 ÷ 0.467 = 2.14

Expected Value Calculation

Once we have the fair probability p from step 2, we compare it against the best available odds across all 94 bookmakers:

Expected Value Formula
EV% = (p × decimal_odds − 1) × 100
where p = no-vig probability, decimal_odds = best available odds
Worked Example
No-vig probability (from Pinnacle)p = 46.7%
Best odds found (at Bet365)2.25
EV = (0.467 × 2.25 − 1) × 100= +5.01%

A positive EV means the offered odds are higher than what the true probability implies — this is the edge. We only show bets with EV between +1% and +20%.

Stake Sizing: Quarter-Kelly

Knowing a bet has positive EV is not enough — how much should you stake? The Kelly Criterion answers this:

Kelly Formula
f* = (p × b − (1 − p)) ÷ b
p = true probability · b = net odds (decimal − 1)
Quarter-Kelly Approach

EVBets uses quarter-Kelly (0.25×) — a widely-adopted variant that significantly reduces variance while preserving long-term bankroll growth. Kelly values shown are based on a $1,000 bankroll.

Quality Filters & Data Integrity

Not every positive EV signal is genuine. EVBets applies several filters to ensure signal quality:

🎯
EV Range: 1% – 20%
Below 1%: noise after transaction costs. Above 20%: likely stale odds or data error.
Upcoming Events Only
Only pre-match events within 7 days. In-play odds are excluded from EV calculation.
📊
Sharp Reference Required
If no sharp bookmaker (Pinnacle, Bet365) quotes the market, we skip the signal.
🔄
Every 30 min Refresh
Odds move fast. Stale signals disappear from the feed as soon as new odds are fetched.
EV Signal Tiers
≥ 10%
Sharp Signal

Rare, high-confidence. Pricing error by soft bookmaker that hasn't adjusted to sharp market movement. Act quickly — these close fast.

5–10%
Strong Edge

Consistent positive expectation. Core of a value betting strategy. Available at multiple bookmakers simultaneously.

1–5%
Moderate Value

Profitable over large samples. Transaction costs and account limitations matter more at this level.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are value bets guaranteed to win?
No. A +5% EV bet still loses about 50–60% of the time depending on the odds. The edge plays out over hundreds of bets. Short-term variance is normal — this is a long-run strategy.
Why don't you use my local bookmaker?
We use The Odds API which covers 47 major international bookmakers. Regional or local books may not be available in our data source. We're expanding coverage continuously.
Can bookmakers close my account for value betting?
Soft bookmakers do limit or close accounts of winning bettors. Using multiple bookmakers, betting close to match time, and keeping stake sizes proportional help manage this risk.
What is a "no-vig" or "fair" odds line?
It's the odds you'd see if bookmakers had zero margin. Calculated by removing the overround from the sharp market odds, giving you the true probability of each outcome.
Why is the EV range capped at 20%?
Signals above 20% are almost always caused by stale odds — one bookmaker hasn't updated after a market-moving event. Acting on these is risky as the bet may be void or limited to very small stakes.
