Middling a Bet

Middling is placing opposing bets at two different lines on the same market so that if the result lands between them, both bets win.

Middle Examples

Point spread middle: Bet Team A −3.5 early, then if the line moves to A −7.5, bet B +7.5. If Team A wins by 4, 5, 6, or 7 — both win. Totals middle: Bet Over 48.5 and Under 51.5; total of 49, 50, or 51 wins both.

Middling Math

You lose vig on one side and win full on the other in worst case (line lands outside the middle). The middle window pays double. EV depends on the probability the result falls inside the gap.

EV = P(middle) × (Win_A + Win_B) − (1 − P(middle)) × vig_loss

When Middles Are +EV

When the initial line was a sharp price and the moved line is also sharp, the gap can yield positive EV if the middle probability × payoff exceeds the small vig drag. Steam moves on spreads of 2.5+ are common middle setups in NFL/NBA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are middles guaranteed profit?

No — only if the result lands in the gap. Outside the gap, you lose the vig on one side.

How is middling different from arbitrage?

Arbitrage covers all outcomes for a guaranteed small profit. Middles bet on overlapping but offset lines, with bigger upside but real downside risk.
